Enjoy some of the best birding in the Midwest! Located in the rolling Missouri Coteau of the Central Flyway, our 800 acre ranch hosts a productive mix of grasslands, wetlands and 500 acres of native prairie. Over 15 waterfowl species and a mix of shorebird species complement dozens of upland and native grassland species.
We are fortunate to be located in a prime birding area on the edge of the Coteau – and just minutes away from numerous state and federal wildlife areas open to public access – including the 30,000 acre Lonetree Wildlife Management Area.
Make Prairie Smoke Ranch Your Birding Destination!
We’re expanding! Reserve a spot for your group in our private bunkhouses right on site. Furnished with kitchen facilities and private bathrooms, our two-room bunkhouses can each accommodate groups of 4-5 guests. You’ll also have access to all the amenities in our main house and 24-hour access to the ranch property. Although your birding tours are self-guided, full-time hosts will be on hand to ensure your prairie experience is a positive one.
Spend a long weekend reconnecting with the prairie and its native residents. Pack a lunch, beverages and some high quality optics and head out for a full day of birding then “head back to the ranch” and gather around the campfire to compare notes and update your life list.
Guests are provided with an orientation and maps to easily navigate around our 800 acre ranch and surrounding area. Most areas are accessible by walking but four-wheel drive vehicles or ATVs are also very helpful to access remote corners of the acreage.
